16: SUNSET PELICAN II Sponsors: J.F. Pate and Associates, Contractors, Inc. Sponsors: Debbie and Michael Quinn Artist: Mark Will

About the Pelican: Mark Will found his interest piqued by his love of the Fairhope area and the tangible things that make it unique, in particular the great God-made sunsets and the interesting character and wonderful grace of the brown pelican (Pelecanus Accidentalis). Native to the Gulf Coast, the pelicans are fish fanciers who make striving runs and dive-bombing attacks to gain their aquatic meals. Bringing together these two aspects of the community - the sunsets and the pelicans - into one finished piece of artwork was a natural for Mark because the most common feeding time for the brown pelican is at sunset.
About The Artist: An observer of the beauty of everyday things, Mark Wills is presently working on an ongoing project of a series on Fairhope's famous sunsets. His work is created with multiple transparent color effects executed with acrylic paints. This finished piece best fits the profile of Wings up, Web feet up, which includes aspects of Fairhope such as the Fairhope Pier and the purple martin bird houses.
About The Sponsors: J.F.Pate & Associates have been involved in numerous project for the City of Fairhope, notably the elegant new library and the majestic First Baptist Church. Art takes Flight and the flock of colorful pelicans seemed a fitting way to give something back to the citizens of Fairhope.
About The Sponsors: Fairhope natives, Debbie and Michael Quinn, have seen Fairhope change over the past many years, but the pelicans have always been a part of everyday life. It's wonderful to see such an interesting new flock!
