26: JEWELS IN FLIGHT Sponsor: University of South Alabama, Baldwin County Artist: Susan and Robert Reed

About the Pelican: As a jeweler and painter, I used a brilliant combination of colors which are my view of the artistic community of Fairhope. Scraps of fused dichroic glass as well as beads, findings, broken stones and any unused particles found in our studio are attached in a mosaic on the chest. Dichroic eyes are custom fused for the vision of the design. Colors are pleasant purple, lime, hot pink, aqua, orange and shades thereof.
About The Artist: Award winning Gulf Coast artists Susan and Robert Reed have been creating their handcrafted artistic jewelry together for over 30 years. Susan, the principal designer, hand sculpts the unique designs in beeswax, and their distinctive style is easily recognized by the actual impressions from nature. Among them you will find insect wings, sea life and bird feathers. Robert takes Susan's handmade design and casts it in precious metals, then sets the stones to produce a spectacular, one-of-a-kind finished piece of jewelry. Dichroic glass, which is glass coated with brilliant metal oxides that cause it to shimmer and change colors as the viewing angle changes, is created and fused by Robert and Susan to complement the hand finished designs. www.sterlingimpressions.net
