30: SUNSET PELICAN Sponsor: Family Practice Associates Artist: Mark Will

About the Pelican: My interest in this project stems from my love of the Fairhope area and the tangible things here that make this place Fairhope. Among those in particular are the subjects of our great God-made sunsets and the interesting character and wonderful grace of the brown pelican (pelecanus accidentalis). Native to the Gulf Coast, these pelicans are fish fanciers who make striving runs and dive-bombing attacks to gain their aquatic meals. I have an ongoing project of painting a series on Fairhope's famous sunsets, using multiple transparent color effects. Bringing these two aspects of our community together - the sunsets and the pelicans - into one finished piece of artwork is natural for me, because the most common feeding time for the brown pelican is at sunset.
About The Artist: Through the use of modern materials and techniques, Mark Will has established his created images in the styles of the master impressionists of the late 1800's and early 1900's. His painterly use of transparent tones and brush strokes reveal a certain air of excitement not normally found in actuality. Mark enjoys working each step of the creative process - from the preparation of the substrate to the hanging on the wall. Design is an important aspect of his creations: "You can pretty well identify my statements in my paintings in part to the basic design element." Offset and unbalanced are common factors in his work. He sees the Lord working through the paintings and renderings: "We live in hope and I hope you see the presentations as beautiful images intended to give you continual happiness." A native of Dayton, Ohio, Mark is a 1960 graduate of Springhill College with a major in fine art. He worked with Mobile Mardi Gras master Edmond C. de Celle until 1966. He is co-founder of the Denny Manufacturing Company in Mobile, an international art producing company of backgrounds for photographers world-wide. He and his wife Nina live in Fairhope.
