4: CIRQUE DE SOLEIL PELICAN Sponsor: Patina Artist: Nancy Fleming

About the Pelican: The pelican to me represents a life truly in balance. One part humorous, at first glance a pelican does not appear to be structurally in proportion for either efficiency or effectiveness. However, when you watch a pelican fly and skim the waves, there is both a grace and precision one rarely sees. Pelicans appear to be docile, just sitting about - until they are out for a meal - then it is all efficiency. Pelicans seem to be comfortable with themselves, yet gather together and fly formation like squadron planes. I feel pelicans combine the traits of humor, precision, an ability to be part of a whole. A calm quiet grace, a simple beauty with just enough surprise - a separate peace. I wanted my Pelican to represent the traits I feel are instrinsic to the Pelican bird and also feature aspects of Fairhope. The Pelican is balancing on a point - or pyramid of metal, then a metal sphere. It is made up of mixed media, consisting of paint, Fairhope finds - glass, wood, beads, ceramic and mosaic glass tile.
