44: MARINE'S DREAM (F4U Corsair) Sponsor: Meehan-D'Oliviera-Frick Group --Merrill Lynch Artist: James Hood

About the Pelican: The Chance Vought F4U Corsair was an American fighter aircraft that saw service in World War II and the Korean War. Initially developed for the Navy's carrier operations, Marine Corps squadrons readily took to this radical new fighter, with its huge radial engine and enormous power and speed. The Marines quickly learned how to make better use of the machine and demonstrate its superiority over Japanese fighters. The Corsair is the fighter flown by the famous Black Sheep Squadron under the command of Pappy Boyington. Over 12,000 of these fighters were built. About two dozen Corsairs are believed to be still airworthy. Other examples are found in museum collections worldwide.
About The Artist: Since moving to the Eastern Shore in 2002, James Hood has focused on sculpture, combining classical life forms with found objects and whimsical forays, developing new techniques in new directions. Inspiration for his works is drawn from his travel experiences, a fertile imagination, and a desire to challenge the norms with apologies to classic orthodoxy; his works may be at once satirical and sublime.
