65: INITIAL FLIGHT Sponsor: Fairhope Single Tax Corporation Artist: The Students & Teachers of Fairhope's Public Schools

About the Pelican: Each student, teacher and staff member of Fairhope's K-1, Elementary and Intermediate Schools will design a feather using their initials as part of the design. The feathers will be cut from copper and attached in overlapping pattern with brass tacks. These will be used in the wings and tail areas. Felicia Olds and Judy Humphrey, Art teachers at the schools, will design the body, head and beak using hammered copper. Other materials may be incorporated as we work with the pelican.
About The Sponsor: In 1894 a group of people from Iowa, believing that the economic conditions under which they lived were unnatural and unjust, decided to incorporate the Single Tax concepts of Henry George. To do this they decided they needed a fresh start so they moved to Fairhope, Alabama. There they founded the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation to demonstrate those single tax concepts in the hope that single tax would be adopted by the governments as the sole source of raising revenue. The Fairhope Single Tax Corporation owns approximately 4500 acres in and around Fairhope, and leases parcels of land to our lessees, who hold renewable 99-year leases to our land and title to any buildings and improvements thereon.
